Interactions between educators and children policy.
How educators interact with children to support their learning, wellbeing, and sense of belonging.
INTERACTIONS BETWEEN EDUCATORS
AND CHILDREN POLICY
All children at our centres will be given the opportunity to develop respectful and positive relationships with each other and with educators and volunteers at the centre. This will be achieved through promoting a safe, secure, and nurturing environment and through building positive and secure attachments throughout their time at the centre.
Aim:
For educator’s interactions with children to be warm and genuine, and to provide positive interactions which foster each child’s social, emotional, physical, and intellectual development.
For educators to show respect for each child and to accommodate their individual needs, feelings, views, and cultural backgrounds.
To use a positive approach in behaviour management, and to foster children’s self-esteem and independence.
Purpose:
For children to feel a sense of belonging and to develop an understanding of themselves as significant and respectful individuals.
Procedure
The Nominated Supervisor and Educational Leader shall guide professional development and practice to promote interactions with children that are positive and respectful.
Educators are to be sensitive to individual children’s feelings and temperament, to interact with each child accordingly, and to respond appropriately to each child’s emotions. For example: Provide praise and positive reinforcement, comfort children when distressed, and help children deal with feelings of anger and frustration.
Through positive interactions with the children, educators provide the opportunity and tools to develop self-reliance and self-esteem.
Educators genuinely listen to children and show interest and respect, both verbally and non-verbally. Educators encourage children to express themselves and their opinions through building positive relationships with them.
Educators will encourage and support the children to express themselves and their opinions.
Educators foster children’s curiosity and thinking by extending upon their interest, sharing ideas, asking open-ended questions, and providing problem-solving experiences.
Educators communicate positively with all children, regardless of background; or ability; celebrate diversity, and include multi-cultural and inclusive perspectives and individual experiences in the program, having regard to the family and cultural values, age, physical and intellectual development and abilities of each child. At all times educators will maintain the dignity and rights of each child.
Educators implement positive behaviour guidance strategies such as modelling communication skills and appropriate behaviour, using encouragement and praise, re-directing behaviour to positive outlets, and helping children gain the tools to solve their own problems in a positive manner.
Educators will support children and provide opportunities for them to interact and develop respectful and positive relationships with each other and with educators and volunteers at the centre.
The size and composition of the groups in which children are being educated and cared for will be considered when interacting with the children at the centre. Please also refer to our Child Safe Policy (HSPOL 01A) and Child Safe Code of Conduct in relation to this policy.
