Incursion policy.

How we organise and risk-assess incursions where visitors come to the centre.

Policy code: PPOL 14 Last updated: February 2024

Introduction

Incursions are a valuable experience for children, families and staff of education and care settings. Incursions (e.g., shows, animal exhibitions, reptile shows, dentist visits etc) will be provided for the children regularly throughout the year. They will be developmentally appropriate and related to the children’s interests. Learning from them will be incorporated into programming to extend and consolidate the children’s knowledge. Children will have the opportunity to reflect on the incursion at the centre with educators and their learning enhanced and extended through planned experiences and play in both the indoor and outdoor learning environments.

Goals

  • We will make incursions part of the program of education and care.

  • Plan for incursions with careful consideration of the health and safety of children, staff, and families.

  • Carry out incursions only where full documentation and permission from families has been obtained.

  • Plan incursions with a consideration to the educational value of the incursion, undertake a full risk assessment and gain permission from families for their child to attend.

Implementation

A risk assessment will be developed for each incursion planned at the centre. This risk assessment will be conducted to minimise the risk to children. The risk assessment will include consideration of, for example:

  • The placement/ location of the show in the centre.

  • If there are animals coming into the centre – the risks associated with this.

  • If there are any water safety considerations.

  • Educator supervision of children and performers as no performer to be left unattended with the children for any length of time.

  • Issues related to slips, trips, and falls if there are cables/cords on the ground.

  • Behaviour management issues related to the children viewing the show.

and any other risks that are determined prior to the incursion occurring at the centre.

Strategies
All incursions will be planned in advance to:

  • maximise both children’s developmental experiences and their safety.

  • reflect the age, capacity, and interests of the children.

  • ensure they are properly supervised and planned.

  • are conducted with written parental permission.

All risks associated with the incursion will be documented on separate incursion risk assessment forms (attached to this policy) and kept at the centre with information related to the planned incursion.

All incursions will be evaluated by staff, children and any families that attend the incursion at the end of the incursion to determine their appropriateness for the children and whether they were effective in enhancing the children’s learning and interests.
