ILLEGAL SUBSTANCES POLICY

Aim

  1. To ensure that when the service is being provided to children no alcohol or unlawful substances including illicit drugs are taken or used by any staff member on any part of the premises of the service.

  2. To set a good example by providing a healthy and hygienic environment for all children, free of alcohol/ tobacco/vape smoke and unlawful substances.

  3. To take all reasonable steps to ensure that no alcohol or illegal substances are present on the premises at all time.

Introduction

All workplaces have a regulatory and legislative duty of care to provide a safe, healthy, and smoke free environment. Children, educators, and families will not be exposed to the harmful effects of second-hand smoke while on our centre premises.

Goals

The education and care service has adopted a smoke free environment policy to protect all persons who access the service from the effects of environmental tobacco smoke. Our centre does not permit the smoking/ vaping of any substance in any area of the premises.

The Nominated Supervisor will

  • Seek to protect children from passive smoking environments during excursions.

  • Ensure that educators receive an induction to our centre where they are informed of the No Smoking/Alcohol/Illegal Substances Policy.

  • Ensure that during orientation and enrolment visits, families are reminded that our centre is a smoke free environment.

  • Encourage educators and families to dispose of cigarette butts appropriately to ensure the safety of all children.

  • Ensure there are 'No Smoking' signs displayed prominently in the centre.

The Approved Provider will

  • Ensure that our centre is free from the use of tobacco and vapes for the children being cared for and educated.

  • Take precautions to promote the health and well-being of children being cared for at our centre by protecting them from exposure to tobacco smoke/vapes.

  • Designate all areas of our centre including the building, outdoor areas, and the car park as smoke free zones.

Under no circumstances will any person attend the service if they are affected by alcohol or drugs, including prescription medication, if in any way the consumption of these items impairs their capacity to supervise, educate or care for children.

Any staff found to be smoking/vaping or have alcohol or illegal substances on the premises will face disciplinary action and possible instant dismissal.
