Supporting children with challenging behaviours.
How we support children who display challenging behaviours, working with families and specialists.
Policy & Procedure for Supporting and Working with Children Displaying Challenging Behaviours
Aim: All children have the right to feel safe, secure, and supported in their learning environment. This policy is to ensure that the educators have clear guidelines to follow when supporting children and families in situations where a child is continually displaying destructive or hurtful behaviour that could harm themselves or others.
Purpose
To maintain a high level of communication and co-operation between educators and families involved in a particular situation.
To have clear and consistent steps for educators and families to follow with regards to managing inappropriate behaviour which is regularly destructive and hurtful and is affecting the rights of others in the centre.
To reflect and extend the aims and rationale for educators, children, and families in the centre’s Positive Guidance Policy.
Procedure
When educators at the centre observe that a particular child's behaviour is persistently inappropriate and is continually causing harm to themselves or others they are to take the following steps:
Keep running records of the behaviours on an official Incident report to observe possible reoccurring patterns and common elements.
Organise to meet with parents to discuss plans or options of dealing with the inappropriate behaviour in the centre and/or at home, to work together to develop a program to meet the individual needs of the child concerned.
Where necessary families and educators seek the support or guidance of professionals in the community for assessment or intervention.
The educators, child's families and professionals involved co-operate together leading to a positive and consistent approach to help in the child learning appropriate limits and appreciating the needs, rights, and feelings of others.
At the discretion of the Director/Nominated Supervisor and Management parents may be requested to accompany their child when present at the centre to assist educators in supervising and in being responsible for their child's behaviour where it may be harmful to others.
Where the child's behaviour is harmful to educators or to other children the Director/Nominated Supervisor and Management have the right to reduce the child's days and hours of attendance until the behaviour is deemed appropriate.
If communication or relationships breakdown with the educators and parents of the child involved or if the family refuses to cooperate with the educators the position of the child may be terminated at the discretion of the Director/Nominated Supervisor or Management.
In accordance with the National Law and Regulations, our educators will follow these procedures to manage their own behaviour, respond appropriately to the behaviour of other children and communicate effectively to resolve conflicts. We will also work with each child’s family to support any children and diagnosed behaviour and social difficulties. However, a child’s enrolment at our service may be terminated at any time if the Director/Nominated Supervisor decides the child’s behaviour threatens the safety, health or wellbeing of any other child or staff at the service.
